M-League 2019 Finals: Games #11-12 and the Awards Ceremony

Final Thoughts

This season was the first full season where viewers from around the world could watch for free without a VPN. As such, this was the first season that many of us had watched. Mahjong has been played at a professional level for years in Japan, but only now has it been broadcasted as a team sport for the whole world to see.

It was an amazing season, with 8 yakuman and several comeback wins. With the Pirates’ comeback, we found out that anything can happen in mahjong. With some chombos and a few dead hands, we learned that even the best of us can make mistakes.

For those of us with clubs, watching this M-League season makes us see what happens when we connect with others. With players from all different professional organization, it shows that we can all come together and show the world the game we love. For those of us who play mahjong, it lets us see how much we have to learn and grow in the game. So much theory is known and shown in all of the players, but there is still so much unknown that we can all find out together. And if we work hard enough, we might even become pros ourselves!

When I started M-League Watch, it started out as something to do during pandemic. Through the twelve games of the finals, writing articles and analyzing numbers, I found out that it can bring us together as a community, even when we’re cheering for different teams. Every game, I watched as a group of mahjong players from all over the world joined together on a voice chat in one of the mahjong Discord servers to talk about M-League. Just seeing the list of people in the voice chat inspires me to keep me writing. When we come together as a community, we can bring joy and smiles to one another doing the thing we love.

From everyone here at M-league Watch, we would like to give a big congratulations to the U-Next Pirates for winning the championship and a big thank you to all you readers for joining us on this M-League adventure. We hope to see you all here again next season!
