If Only
In E2-0, Kinoshita starts out with an amazing haipai. His hand holds a pair of easts, norths and 1m, and an ankou of 9m. The hand could get honitsu, honroutou, toitoi or all three. Being the north seat in the east round, he has a chance to get a baiman from this hand. With Kinoshita’s second draw, he turns the east pair into an ankou. Over the next few draws, his hand fails to advance. At the start of the second row, Takahata reached tenpai and calls riichi on the 5p kanchan. A few turns later, Kinoshita turns the north into an ankou. He is iishanten from suuankou tanki, but with the pressure of the riichi, he calls riichi waiting on the 5p kanchan as well. Draw after draw, neither Kinoshita nor Takahata is able to win. Kinoshita discards tiles, making ankous of 1s and 7p in the discards. If he had only kept those tiles, the suuankou dream would have come true. The hand ends in ryuukyoku, with everyone but Fujita in tenpai.
Dama Haneman
In S2-0, Koshiyama’s hand starts out strong, being iishanten with a ryanmen waiting to be completed. He draws a 8m dora, holding it to make it his pair. He manages to shift his 123m into a 234m, giving his hand tanyao and a chance for sanshoku. His 8m gambit pays, drawing it as his pair and becoming tenpai waiting on the 25p. With a Pinfu/Tanyao/Dora 2 hand as dealer, he stays dama with a surprise dealer mangan. If he manages to get the 2p, he will complete the Sanshoku and upgrade it to a dealer haneman. Sure enough, Fujita deals the 2p, giving Koshiyama 18000 and the lead.
There is Still Hope
In S2-1, Takahata starts out with a iishanten haipai, Fujita is 2-shanten with a red dora Kinoshita holds 2 red dora. As with many iishanten hands, Takahada is unable to do get to tenpai by the end of the first row. Koshiyama, with a Junchan/Sanshoku chance, and Kinoshita, with a standard pinfu hand, are able to catch up to Takahata by the end of the 1st row, while Fujita struggles to advance his hand. By the end of the second row, Fujita is the one ahead, getting to tenpai and calling riichi on a 25s ryanmen wait. Drawing the 2s dora, Kinoshita starts to bail. When Kinoshita draws the 5s, he decides to discard the 9m suji instead of the 7m genbutsu or pushing his iishanten, keeping safe and holding onto the the hope that he can get to chiitoi tenpai. It doesn’t work out for Kinoshita in the end, but he was able to get out of the hand safely without giving into temptation.
