M-League 2020 Week 17: Full of Surprises

Standings

The top team in this week’s performance rankings is the U-Next Pirates. In this dire situation for the team, they were able to come through and get closer and closer to leaving the bottom of the rankings. They were able to beat the Abemas, the top team in the league, in three of their four games, raising team spirit. This marks the team’s 2nd week in a row of positive results and their 12th game in a row without a 4th.

2nd in the performance rankings is the Akasaka Drivens. Breaking their 9/10 week downward tread, the Drivens were able to get their act back together when put in a dangerous situation. With Maruyama coming back from her COVID leave and getting a win right off the bat, it show the team that even though it looks like their down and out, hard work and determination can get them out of any situation. With the results this week, it brings the team up to 5th place.

Team Raiden worked hard as a team this week to take 3rd place in the performance rankings. All players, including Hagiwara, were able to put in a big effort this week to bring in a good result. They were able to beat the EX Furinkazan in all four of the games against them and were able to surpass them in the standings. With the results, Team Raiden was able to jump from 5th place up to 2nd place. This is the team’s 2nd week with a positive trend.

4th place in the performance rankings is the Sega Sammy Phoenix. Even though they didn’t earn as many points as the Drivens or the Pirates, it does close the gap between them and the teams above them.

Going into the teams in the negatives, the Shibuya Abemas take 5th spot in the performance rankings. -18.7 doesn’t really make much of a difference in the standings for them. In fact, the distance between them and 2nd place (485.6) is more than 150 points more than the distance between 2nd and 8th (309.5). Even if they got 4th for half their games and 3rd in the other half, they would more than likely get a playoff spot. Even though this is their 2nd week on a downward trend, it really doesn’t hurt them at all.

6th place in the performance rankings is the Kadokawa Sakura Knights. At this juncture, they’re teetering in a precarious position. Even though they’re in 4th place, they are 121.8pts away from falling out of a playoff position.

7th this week in the performance rankings is the EX Furinkazan. Having had over 450.0pts in week 12, the team has put themselves to almost 0.0pts. With this being their 3rd week of negative results, they put themselves dangerously close to a dangerous position.

And finally, in 8th place in the performance rankings, is the Konami Mahjong Fight Club. It’s a bit surprising to find them in this position, considering they’ve been in 3rd for most of the past 9 weeks. Big losses for both Sasaki and Fujisaki were the big lowlights of the week. Their results this week drop them three spots and put them in 6th place, just barely in a playoff spot. They will need to figure out how to get winning again to avoid another 2019 semifinals disaster.

That’s all for this week! The fight for a playoff spot gets more and more exciting every week! With only five more weeks left in the regular season, all the teams from 2nd place Team Raiden to 8th place U-Next Pirates need to make sure that they don’t let down their guard. Will the Pirates have another come from behind performance? Can the Konami crew avoid a repeat of the 2019 semis? Can we really survive a weekend without listening to Hiyoshi’s yelling? As always, we’ll just have to wait and see!
