Standings
Let’s try something different. I’ll be going down the standings instead of the usual performance rankings order
The Shibuya Abemas take 1st place in the League and 2nd in the performance rankings. Being 1st place in the standings, the Shibuya Abemas played to give themselves a bigger lead going into the semifinals. The team actually reached +702.7 at one point in the week, making it the highest team score in M-League history. The team ends the season with an record of 25/30/17/18 with +654.7pts.
2nd place in the standings and this week’s top performer is the Kadokawa Sakura Knights. The team ended the week with their best foot forward and they took the last game of season. Uchikawa, who was fighting for the top spot in the individual standings, won two of his three games and ended as the top player of the February/March games. At the end of the season, the Kadokawa Sakura Knights had a record of 28/21/20/21 with +497.3pts.
3rd place in this week’s performance rankings is the Akasaka Drivens. Getting either first or second for all their games this week, they earned enough points to surpass the EX Furinkazan and arrive very close to the ±0.0 mark. They end the season with a record of 24/20/22/24 with -3.2pts 3rd place in the standings.
The EX Furinkazan take 4th place in the standings and 7th place in this week’s performance rankings. The team stayed really stagnant this week, placing 3rd place in all their games. However, after missing the playoffs last year and placing 8th then, this regular season 4th place can give them the moment to move further. They end the season with a 20/22/25/23 record and -108.8pts.
Placing 5th in the standings and 6th in the performance rankings is Konami Mahjong Fight Club. Another comeback performance from Sasaki gave them the extra points to stay above the elimination line. Sasaki is truly the star of the team, as he wins the individual standings and the most points in a single game. The team ends the season with a 23/21/22/24 record and -168.5pts.
Earning the coveted 6th spot and 4th place in the individual standings is Team Raiden. Kurosawa’s completely unexpected 1st place in the team’s last game gave them just enough points to escape missing out of the playoffs. With more games ahead of them, Hagiwara has a chance to redeem himself in the semis. Since both the 2018 and the 2019 season had the lowest qualifier earning the top spot, perhaps it is a sign of things to come. Team Raiden ends the season with a 22/21/22/25 record and -210.5pts.
Placing just below the elimination line in 7th place and 5th in this week’s performance rankings is the U-Next Pirates. The team had a chance up until the very last hand. However, the team couldn’t come through with the haneman in the last hand and missed the playoffs. Kobayashi had an amazing performance this season, carrying the team and winning the last place avoidance award. The team ends this season with a 15/29/27/19 record and -264.3pts.
And finally, in 8th place, we have the Sega Sammy Phoenix. At the start of the week, they were just barely in position to take a playoff spot. But one bad game after another, they started to fall off. By the end of the week, they had lost three of the four games and lost -191.7. The Phoenix ends the season with a record of 23/16/26/25 with -396.7pts.
This Week’s M-League Stats
For the Sega Sammy Phoenix and the U-Next Pirates, the games were the last games of their 2020 season.
Through a tweet, the Sega Sammy Phoenix thanked all their supporters and encouraged them to keep watching M-League.
The U-Next Pirates told supporters that the Pirates’ voyage this season was over and thanked everyone for their support.
After 22 weeks of excitement, pain, sadness and fun, we have come to the end of the regular season. For the Pirates and the Phoenix fans, it is the end of a well-fought season (and maybe the start of more frequent player commentator appearances!). For everyone else, it will be some of the most intense games. Each team will have 16 games to get to the top 4, then 12 games after that to show why they should be the champions. The countdown to the semifinals has begun and we can’t for them to start! See you all on April 12th!
