Standings
Like the end of the regular season, I’ll be going down the standings for the end of the semifinals.
In 1st place in the overall standings is the Shibuya Abemas. The team had an amazing last quarter of the semifinals. With the help of all of the players, the team had an explosive 3-1-0-0 record for +248.9pts, almost doubling their score. In large part for this huge gain is Matsumoto’s suuankou win. Even when their scores are halved, the team will still have a 121.2pt lead over the 2nd place Kadokawa Sakura Knights.
Taking 2nd spot in the standings is the Kadokawa Sakura Knights. They had an even record this semifinals quarter, getting a small gain of +21.2. Uchikawa was the star of the team this week, getting a 41,400 score even with Matsumoto’s suuankou and a 52,000 1st place. Overall, the team managed to add some more points to their total, ending up with more points at the end than what they had at the beginning. They will have to put in a bit of work to catch up to the Shibuya Abemas, but playing against them for 12 games will mean that the points will swing very easily.
The Akasaka Drivens take 3rd spot in the overall standings. A bit of a struggle for the team this quarter, they were unable to get a 1st, but they also managed to avoid 4th for all four of the games. The team will be very glad that the scores will be cut in half, as it will put them 255.2pts behind the Abemas instead of the 510.3pts difference between them at the end of the semis.
Taking 4th spot and the last spot in the finals is the EX Furinkazan. This was a hard fought semifinals for the team. Going into the 4th quarter, they were 154.3pts from a playoff spot. On the first day of the quarter, Takizawa came in clutch, winning twice in a row to get the team +123.4pts. With the performance also bringing the Konami Mahjong Fight Club down, the team took 4th place by the end of the day. Though Takizawa ended up getting last because of a pair of unlucky hands, Katsumata was able to keep the team just above Konami. The team heads into the finals quite behind the top team, but the Drivens were 4th in 2018 and the Pirates were 4th in 2019 , so maybe the EX Furinkazan can take it this year!
In 5th place and just missing the playoffs is the Konami Mahjong Fight Club. Maybe it was Takamiya just missing 3rd place by 400 points. Maybe it was Matsumoto’s yakuman. Maybe EX Furinkazan just got really lucky. Either way, this was a disappointing ending to what looked like a hopeful semifinals. For the 2nd year in a row, the team is eliminated in the semifinals and the top player of the season and highest score in a single game maker, Sasaki Hisato, will not be able to play in the finals.
The team thanked its fans for their support and told their fans that they will be training right away so they can win it all next season!
And finally, placing 6th in the overall standings and this quarter, we have Team Raiden. For the 3rd year in a row, Team Raiden has failed to make it into the finals. With their standings going into the semifinals, it was going to be hard for the team to make the finals. They tried hard, but missed the mark. In the last quarter, desperate plays made them deal into more hands and ended up getting last place in three of those games.
After the games on Thursday, the team knew that it wasn’t going to make the finals. Both Kurosawa and Setokuma thanked their fans on Twitter for their warm messages and for everyone who makes M-League possible.
This Quarter’s M-League Stats
After three weeks of intense games, we finally have our top 4 teams! There will be a 1 week break, then the 12-game final will begin on May 10! Who will be the champion? Is the third time a charm for the Shibuya Abemas? Can the newest team, the Kadokawa Sakura Knights, take the top spot? Can the Akasaka Drivens win it all again like they did in the 2018 season? Or will it be the underdogs, the EX Furinkazan, keep the tradition of the underdogs winning the championship? It’s less than 10 more days until the finals begin! See you then!
