M-League 2021 Week 21: Just Around the Corner

Standings

The third time getting positive, taking 1st in the performance rankings for the first time since week 1, we have the legendary Team Raiden. After weeks and weeks of suffering, the team has decided to end the season off on a high note. Setokuma broke the more than month-long 1st place drought, with Kurosawa and Honda extending the streak. Though it doesn’t matter for the team in terms of getting into the playoffs, it does give the fans something to cheer about. This week, the Team went 3/0/0/1 and gained +131.2.

In 2nd place are the Kadokawa Sakura Knights. With the Kadokawa Sakura Knights teetering on the edge, they sent their top two players, Hori and Sawazaki to keep them from falling. And boy, did theyget the job done. 2nds from Sawazaki and a 1st and a 3rd from Hori to gave them a record of 1/2/1/0 and boosted their score by +69.4. With the gain, they moved out of the danger zone and into 4th place.

3rd in the performance rankings are the Sega Sammy Phoenix. An even record usually means that your team ends the week around 0. However, if your record is 2/0/0/2 and both of your 1sts are more than +60.0, you typically end up with a much higher score. This week, Kayamori and Kondo both had the pleasure getting those big 1sts and helped the team gain +54.3, putting the team into 2nd place.

4th are the Konami Mahjong Fight Club. Being in 5th place with 6 games to play against the Akasaka Drivens at the start of the week, they were the target for the Drivens to bring down. With four of those games being this week, they needed to defend themselves with whatever they could. The first three games didn’t go so well, getting 4th in two of them, but they prevent the Drivens from getting a 1st. In the last game, they secured their spot in the playoffs by getting a 1st and making the Akasaka Drivens last, creating a 100.0+ points swing. This week, the team went 2/0/0/2 and had a gain of +13.3, putting more than 500 points between them and the Akasaka Drivens.

Rounding out the positive teams is the U-Next Pirates. They stayed mostly out of the way this week, going 0/3/1/0 to just be positive by +10.7. They chose to rest Mizuhara this week, either to let her rest or to make sure that she gets the individual award for highest total score in the regular season. With the EX Furinkazan falling, the U-Next Pirates took back 1st place.

Going into the negatives, the Shibuya Abemas take 6th place in the performance ranking. Even though the team was even at 0/2/2/0, their 3rds outweighed their 2nds. In fairness, the games that they played had runaway 1sts, so it would have been very difficult for them to gain any points. This week, their -40.5 performance put them a bit off track of 1st place overall, but they still sit in 3rd place and within a 1st of taking the spot.

In 7th are the Akasaka Drivens. This week was a must-win week, but they just weren’t able to do it. They weren’t able to hit their rivals, the Konami Mahjong Fight Club, hard and they couldn’t even get a 1st. This week, they had a record of 0/1/2/1 and a loss of -83.0. Next week, they will have to send Maruyama out and hope for a miracle. If they can get a dealer double yakuman off of one of their opponents, it would be a swing of over 250 points. if they can do that and get wins for their other games, then they might be able to get in.

And finally, in 8th place, are the EX Furinkazan. The end of the season doesn’t tend to be the strongest time for the EX Furinkazan. Not even able to get a 2nd, the team had a record of 0/0/2/2 and got -155.4, dropping them all the way from 1st place to 6th place. Even though they sit in 6yh place, the Akasaka Drivens are far enough away that the EX Furinkazan can be assured that they will get to teh playoffs. And though 6th place isn’t the best spot to be in, it isn’t an impossible position. The U-Next Pirates were able to win the championship in 2019 after going into the semifinals with a larger margin.
