Standings
The top performer in the first quarter of the semifinals is the Konami Mahjong Fight Club. Winning both games on the second day of the semis, there is a big contrast from their semis performance over the past two seasons. All four players had good results, especially Sasaki Hisato who got this season’s first yakuman. Over the four games they played, they got +154.5 and had a record of 2/2/0/0.
Next in the performance rankings are the Kadokawa Sakura Knights. After placing second in both of their first two games (placing behind Konami), the team flipped it around and got first in their next two games. And though the team didn’t get a yakuman, they were quite close to being this week’s top performer. From a close fight by Sawazaki, to a South 4 dealer haneman by Uchikawa, to 45,000 by both Okada and Hori, the team has proved that they are a force to be reckoned with. This quarter, they earned +146.7pts and had a record of 2/2/0/0.
Third are the Shibuya Abemas. Winning both games on the first day, the team begins to carve their path towards the finals. The A big highlight for the team was the 1,000 point hand that Matsumoto won to tie Kondo and prevent him from taking all the points. With a 2/0/1/1 record and a +19.7, their performance this quarter put them squarely into the top 3.
Going into the negatives, the Sega Sammy Phoenix are 4th in the performance rankings. performances. From having their double riichi beat to having to share a first place, a bit of bad luck befell the team. Even so, Uotani beating Asakura by 100 points and the fact that the team was able to get a 1st means that there is great promise for the team ahead. This quarter, they went 1/0/2/1 and had a loss of 57.6pts.
The 5th-best performer in the quarter is the EX Furinkazan. The EX Furinkazan’s luck seems to come in waves. It had gone up for weeks, then down for weeks. From the end of February into March, the team started to fall. This season, the team’s fall continued. Losses from Katsumata and Rumi, a 3rd from Matsugase and a lukewarm 2nd from Aki meant a big drop for the team. Because they started in 4th place in the standings, the drop is a big hit to their finals chances. OF course, the team still has 12 more games to turn it around. This quarter, the team went 0/1/1/2 and went -118.3.
The U-Next Pirates. The scores were close going into the semifinals and the Pirates were in 1st, so they had the most to lose. Because of this, they lost the most. From a bold push from Mizuhara to some bad luck from Asakura, the team tried their best but couldn’t get there. They were first at the start of their games, but ended up losing points through rons and tsumos. Having a 0/0/2/2 record and a 145.0pts loss, the team fell hard, going from 1st to 4th.
