In E1-2, there are 2,600 in bonus sticks on the table after the previous hand went to a draw. Hori starts off the hand at a nice 2-shanten with a 1s dora. The first row is not helpful at all, providing him a lot of tiles to tsumogiri. In the 2nd row, Hori drops the dora, converts his hand to tanyao and gets to tenpai before the end of the row, calling riichi on a 36m ryanmen. Two turns later, dealer Tojo discards the 3m while in tenpai for a mangan and deals into Hori. Hori wins the hand with Riichi/Pinfu/Tanyao/Dora 2 for 8,000+600, plus 2,000 in riichi stick.

Ryuukyoku Ryuukyoku Mangan

April 19, Game 2, E3-2

In E3-2, there are 2,600 in bonus sticks on the table after the previous two hands went to a draw. Date is in 3rd place and starts out 3-shanten with a 2m dora and a red 5m. In the first row, Date pairs up the 2m and gets to iishanten by the end of the row. At the start of the 2nd row, Date gets to tenpai and calls riichi on a 2m/South shanpon. Near the end of the 2nd row, Ooi threw the 2m dora trying to call riichi as the dealer, but ended up dealing into Date. Date wins the hand with Riichi/Dora 3/Aka 1 for 8,000+600 (plus two riichi sticks) for the lead.

Open Haneman

April 19, Game 2, E4-0

In E4-0, Date is in the lead and wanting to extend it. She starts off the hand beautifully, being 4-shanten with pairs of east, green dragon and red dragon. At the end of the first row, Date calls pon on the easts. A few turns later, she calls pon on the red dragon. In the middle of the 2nd row, Date draws a third green dragon to get to tenpai on a 58s ryanmen for haneman. Soon after, Hori pushes the 8s while in tenpai and deals into Date. Date wins the hand with Honitsu/East/Green Dragon/Red Dragon/Dora 1 for 12,000, putting Date above 55,000.

Takame

April 19, Game 2, S3-0

In S3-0, Hori is in 4th place, 10,900 behind 3rd. He starts the hand out well, holding three completed groups and a single 1m dora. By turn 4, Hori is iishanten, but still looking for a pair. At the end of the row, Hori creates a sanmenchan. In the 2nd row, Hori shifts his hand to tanyao and creates a chance for a 345p sanshoku. At the end of the row, Hori gets to tenpai and calls riichi on a 258m sanmenchan, with 58m giving sanshoku.

Two turns later, Date calls a chii to get to tenpai on a 25m ryanmen.

Near the end of the hand, Ooi makes a chii for a chance to get to tenpai. Ooi’s decides to discard the 8m for tenpai and ends up dealing into Hori.

Hori wins the hand with Riichi/Pinfu/Tanyao/Sanshoku for 8,000, enough to put him into 3rd place.

Closing it Out

April 19, Game 2, S4-0

In S4-0, Tojo is in 1st place, but only 3,500 ahead of 2nd place Date. If she wants to stay 1st, she will have to win the hand to end the game. Tojo starts off 4-shanten with a pair of 1m that will make it difficult for her to open her hand. In her first few turns, she draws nice connecting tiles, allowing her to get rid of her 1m pair to shift to tanyao. In the middle of the 2nd row, Tojo calls a pon to get to iishanten. At the end of the 2nd row, Tojo gets to tenpai and waits with a 47p ryanmen. Soon after, Ooi discards the 7p and deals into Tojo. Tojo wins the hand with Tanyao only for 1,000. With the win, the team has successfully avoided 3rd and 4th for their first 4 games.

Standings

The Sega Sammy Phoenix continue to soar upwards, having a positive gain for the fourth game in a row. In just these four games, the team went from 4th place to 1st with almost a 100.0pts lead. Date’s 2nd place isn’t the best result, but it does stop the slip and brings them just a bit closer to their opponents. For Hori and Ooi, it was a close game, but the result is a bad one. Both teams slip further from 1st place, meaning that they will need to push in the next few games to get to 1st.

And that’s it for day 2! The Phoenix were definitely the biggest mover of the day. But will they be able to keep this lead? Can their three opponents catch up? Can the Shibuya Abemas get out of 3rd place? As always, we’ll just have to wait and see!
