M-League 2022-23 Week 11: Improvement

Standings

The top-performing team this week is the U-Next Pirates. The team has finally made the final push into the positives. After two and a half months of being in the negatives, the team is in the positives for the first time this season. Nakabayashi and Yu kept the team from falling and Mizuhara and Kobayashi brought the team up and out. With Kobayashi’s South 1 dealer rampage, he earned big points and closed the gap on the top thre teams. If they have another week like this, They may move into 3rd place or even higher. This week, they went +102.7 and had a record of 1/2/1/0, winning their second week in a row.

Next are the Akasaka Drivens. The Drivens are starting to turn it around again. With all four players getting a positive score, the team added +90.9 to their score. This effort was headed by Taro, who fought hard against Matsumoto and the first place Abemas to win his game. With a 1/3/0/0 record this week, the team moves up to 7th place overall, a sight sparsely seen over the past two months.

The last gaining team this week is Team Raiden. The first half of the week featured a Hagiwara double duty. Unfortunately, an unlucky dealer haneman deal-in while in riichi meant that his first 1st had to wait. To save the team, team powerhouse Honda and Saikyousen winner Setokuma were sent out the second half of the week. With Honda’s skill, he was able to register his 8th win this season. With a strong last dealership from Setokuma, he was able to make big gains for the team despite placing 2nd. In the end, the team had a 1/2/0/1 record and gained+41.0, getting them closer to the positives once again.

Going into the negatives, Shibuya Abemas are next in the performance rankings. It was a mixed week for the team. At the start, Matsumoto got a high 2nd and Ooi won his game, keeping the team above +500.0. At the second half of the week, Shiratori slipped and fell out of the top 3 in 4th place avoidance and Ooi had a hard 3rd. After an even 1/1/1/1 record, the team dropped -9.4, though they still hold rank 1.

The Konami Mahjong Fight Club take 5th spot in the performance rankings. They’ve had worse, but they’ve had better. From their first three games, it looked like the team might fall below +100.0. In the team’s last game of the week, Takamiya was sent out. With aggressive plays (including a hadaka tanki), she firmly won her game and is now the top player of her team. Going 1/0/2/1 with a loss of only -35.4, the team remains in range of the 2nd place EX Furinkazan.

6th are the Kadokawa Sakura Knights. The team is still flip-flopping between gaining and losing. Uchikawa had many missed wins and wrong tankis, but he still managed to win his game. Okada played well, but still lost points almost every hand due to tsumos and draws. With the 1/0/2/1 record and -41.9 loss, the team moves further away from the positives and the chasing pack.

EX Furinkazan are 7th in the performance rankings. For most of the team, it was a struggle. Aki didn’t deal in and she got last. Matsugase didn’t win any of his riichis, dealing in with some of them. The only bright side of the week was the fabulous performance by Rumi, who won just under half of her hands and registers one of the top 5 best scores this season. This week, they lost -49.5 and went 1/0/1/2, losing some ground on the Konami and the Abemas.

And finally, coming last in the performance rankings for the second week in a row, we have the Sega Sammy Phoenix. The team just can’t get a break. Kondo and Uotani lost their games, dealing in many times due to riichis and traps. Even Kayamori’s 1st only had her win two hands. With the 1/0/1/2 record and -98.7 loss, it marks yet another week of falling. The fall this week was big enough to move the team into 8th place in the overall standings. If they want to keep their team, they will have to change up their strategy and find positive momentum after the holiday break.
