M-League 2022-23 Week 12: Hope

Standings

The top team this week is the Sega Sammy Phoenix. After a hard week last week, the Phoenix chose to end the year strong. Uotani beat her teacher Yu for the third time this season and Tojo finished the last game of 2022 with a 1st place. With their 2/1/0/1 record and +77.1 gain, the Phoenix move into the -200.0s. If they can continue this in the new year, they will be a force to be reckoned with.

Next is Team Raiden. After over 14 months without a 1st, Hagiwara finally has a 1st again. A clutch south round with a mangan to gain points and a cheap hand to finish off the game. Even though Honda finished the year off with a 4th, I’m sure Raiden fans are happy with this week’s results. This week, the team went 1/2/0/1 with a score gain of +33.9.

Kadokawa Sakura Knights are 3rd in the performance rankings. The week didn’t start out so great, with both Shibukawa and Okada getting 4th place. To end off the week, 2021-22 finals MVP Hori Shingo was sent out to finish the year strong. On his first game, a strong finish in South 4 gave the team a win. He was sent out again the next game and again, marking the first double 1st by a single player this season and moving from 27th to 15th in a single day. With a 2/0/0/2 record and a +32.0, the team finishes the year in 6th place.

Taking 4th in the performance is the Konami Mahjong Fight Club. The team had a 1/1/1/1 even record this week, but their results were in favour of positive results. Even with Takizawa’s 4th, he finished the game above 20,000. With Takamiya’s 1st place, she is the top player of December, gaining +205.0 with her three 1sts this month. This week, the team gained +28.8 to maintain 3rd place.

In 5th in the performance rankings are the EX Furinkazan. The team had an average week, but the highlight was Rumi. She won 6 out of the 13 hands in her game and won, putting her just a few points from the positives in the individual standings. This week’s 1/2/1/0 record and +22.7 gain leaves the team in 2nd place in the team standings, just +115.3 away from 1st place.

In 6th and the last gaining team this week is the U-Next Pirates. The team is glad to finish 2022 on a positive note, no matter how small. Nakabayashi scored his second 1st this season and and Kobayashi was able to gain points even against a difficult Hori. With their 1/2/0/1 record and a gain of +9.5, ending 2022 with +105.2, one of their best mid-season scores ever. In addition, they were to top team of the month, up +172.2 in 14 games.

Going into the negative, we have the Akasaka Drivens in 7th. After a very strong week last week, the lost it all. Unable to get a 1st this week, the Christmas miracle didn’t come. They end the year with only three positive weeks out of twelve. This week, they went 0/1/2/1 with a loss of -98.2. They end the year in 8th place, urgently needing something big to change in the new year.

And finally, coming last in the performance rankings, we have the Shibuya Abemas. This isn’t how they wanted to end the year. Four games of negative results, with the 4th place considered to be one of their better results. The team is still 1st in the team rankings, but their 0/0/3/1 record and -105.8 loss this week lowers their lead significantly. After three weeks of going down, the Abemas hope to bounce back and keep their 1st place standing.

That’s all for this week and for 2022! M-League will take a 1-week break (besides the two specials) before getting right back to it on January 2, 2023. Who will surprise us in the new year? As always, we’ll just have to wait and see! See you in 2023!
