M-League 2022-23 Week 14: Rise Up

Standings

The top team this week is the U-Next Pirates. After losing over 100.0pts last week and falling into the negatives, they managed to gain almost ever single point back. With two uras, Nakabayashi was able to win his game. With an ippatsu and three uras, Kobayashi won the team’s last game of the week. With the good progress, the team gets closer to the top 3. This week, the Pirates went 2/1/1/0 with a gain of +109.6pts.

Next is the EX Furinkazan. The team was very good at utilizing their dealerships. With Matsugase and Aki going on big dealer streaks, both of the were able to win their games. For Aki in particular, she was able to get to 63,600 before East 1 finished. With 2/0/1/1 record and a +70.0 gain, the EX Furinkazan go from within 81.1pts to 29.0pts of 1st place.

The last gaining team this week is the Konami Mahjong Fight Club. Date struggled at the start of the week, finishing the game at exactly 0. In the second game, Takizawa was sent out and he managed to win his game in South 4, getting his second win in a row. Date managed to win the next game to almost ensure a positive week for the team. By staying positive with a 2/0/1/1 record and a +17.9pts gain, the team stays in 1st place in the overall standings.

Going into the negatives, Team Raiden is 4th in the performance rankings. The team had an even 1/1/1/1 record and went -4.2pts this week, but it doesn’t mean that they didn’t have positives. On the team’s third game of the week, Honda looked like he was down and out. Then, Honda got big gains in East 4 and South 2 to put him in 1st place. With his 10th first place, he now has more 1sts than each of the top players last season. It will be exciting to see if Honda can beat the record of 13 firsts in a single regular season.

5th in the performance rankings is the Sega Sammy Phoenix. The Sega Sammy Phoenix needed a 1st place and they just couldn’t do it. They got 2nd three times this week, missing out on the 1st place bonus. Without the 1st place bonuses, they can’t get into playoff position. With a 0/3/0/1 record and a -21.9pts loss, the team is stuck in 7th place and over 200.0pts away from 6th place.

Next is the Akasaka Drivens. The Akasaka Drivens got close multiple times this week, but they weren’t able to get 1st. Taro was less than a mangan away from 1st but wasn’t able to get it. Sonoda needed ura for 2nd but missed it. Maruyama was even chuuren 2-shanten but wasn’t even able to get to a chinitsu tenpai. On the bright side, Murakami was able to get his own South 4 haneman to gain points in his game. This week, the Drivens went 0/2/1/1 with a loss of -47.4pts.

In 7th is Kadokawa Sakura Knights. It started off well for the Kadokawa Sakura Knights, then it went downhill. Shibukawa started off the week with a win, but got a 4th in his next game. Hori was close in his game, but ended up dropping to 3rd in the last hand. As for Uchikawa, he got to a yakuman tenpai for the third time this season and didn’t win. With the 1/0/1/2 record and -53.0pts drop, the team falls further away from the positives. At this point, it’s easier for 5th place to get to 1st than for the 6th place Kadokawa Sakura Knights to get to 5th place.

And finally, for the third week in a row, the Shibuya Abemas are last in the performance rankings. The Shibuya Abemas are currently going 14 games without a 1st place. They got close with Hinata, but Shibukawa was just a bit stronger. With a 0/1/2/1 record and a -71.0pts loss, the team drops down to 4th and is close to dropping to 5th. Unless they can stop the bleeding, the will erase all the hard work that they did at the start of the season.

That’s all for this week! We’re less than 10 weeks away from the end of the regular season! The fight for the top is as interesting as ever. Can the U-Next Pirates make another push for the top 3? Can the Shibuya Abemas stop the drop? Will Uchikawa’s yakuman chances ever convert? As always, we’ll just have to wait and see!
