M-League 2022-23 Week 21: March Forward

Standings

The top team this Konami Mahjong Fight Club. They have been fight for weeks and weeks to get to top spot and they have finally done it (albeit for only a day, but they still reached it). On Thursday, Takizawa got a lucky haipai and a lucky uradora in the last hand to take a win and getting the team within 0.5pts of 1st. In the next game, Takamiya only needed a haneman ron or a mangan tsumo to take 1st in the last hand, but Takamiya got the perfect draws to get a yakuman instead. With this huge +94.1pts gain and 2/0/2/0 record, the team moves up to above +600.0pts.

Next are the EX Furinkazan. With the Konami Mahjong Fight Club hot on their heels, they needed to win games to stay on top. They fell behind on Tuesday and then Konami overtook them on Thursday. With the team dethroned, they really needed to win to take it back. When Aki went for the last game of the week, she was able to double her score in just two hands and held onto the game to take 1st place and get the team back in 1st. This week, they had a 1/2/0/1 record and a +67.2pts gain putting them above +600.0.

The last gaining team is the Kadokawa Sakura Knights. The team was in 6th place and wanted to make space. Both Uchikawa and Okada did very well in their games, both of them getting a big baiman. For Uchikawa, he got the perfect tile in the very last hand to move from 3rd to 1st. For Okada, she called riichi with only four tiles left in the wall and drew er winning tile with the last one. Though Shibukawa got really unlucky, the team ended positive with a 2/1/0/1 record and a +37.8pts gain, moving up to 5th place.

Going into the negatives, we have the Akasaka Drivens. They had a middling week, but Sonoda completed a feat that the team hasn’t seen in years. On Monday, Sonoda was able to get his 10th win of the season after being down early and then winning six hands in a row. With the 10th win, it’s the first time since the inaugural season that an Akasaka Drivens player has gotten double-digit 1sts. The team went -2.7pts with an even 1/1/1/1 record this week. Time is running out. If they want to make the semifinals and not be forced to change their roster, they will have to bring 1sts.

Fifth in the performance rankings are the Shibuya Abemas. On one hand, they are still in the top 4. On the other, they are slowly slipping. The week started off strong with a 1st place from Matsumoto and it looked like the team was going to finish the week positive with Shiratori in 1st place going into South 4. Then, during Shiratori’s dealership, Takamiya wins a yakuman tsumo and Shiratori is forced to pay the dealer penalty, putting him out of 1st place and actually losing points that game. With a 1/1/1/1 record and a -12.7pts loss, the team is still in a playoff position, but they can’t get too careless or they might lose it.

Team Raiden are 6th. Considering the team went 0/2/1/1, it’s impressive that they only lost -33.3pts. In Hagiwara’s 2nd place, he won six hands but just missed passing Sonoda. In Setokuma’s 2nd, he won four hands and just missed passing Aki. With the team slipping down to 6th place, they will have to work hard. If they can target the 3rd place Abemas and 4th place Pirates on Thursday, then they can move some more places up.

The Sega Sammy Phoenix are next. Things don’t always go your way. Despite Kondo getting a 1st in his game, the rest of the team wasn’t so lucky. Kayamori was in 2nd place and had a chance at 1st, but Takizawa had a lucky startin hand and she ended up 3rd. Uotani was within a mangan of 2nd, a haneman of 1st, but Takamiya won a yakuman and she was stuck in last. After the -69.8pts loss and 1/0/1/2 record, the team is further away from their goal of the semifinals. However, all is not lost. If they can get two 1sts in a row and do some targeting, they may be able to get there in less than a week.

And finally, coming last in the performance rankings, we have the U-Next Pirates. They won a lot of hands, but they also had a lot of deal-ins. Combined with a lot of tsumo losses, the team just wasn’t able to gain points. With a record of 0/1/2/1 and a -80.6pts loss, the team drops down to 4th. They are within a 4th of 6th place, so they will have to be careful. Facing the 7th place Phoenix and 8th place Drivens on Friday, some wins against them may clinch them a spot in semis.
