M-League 2022-23 Semifinals: Games #7-12

Standings

The top performer these past six games is the U-Next Pirates. After a painful first fifth of the semifinals, they finally had luck on their side. On Monday, the UK duo (Suzuki Yu and Nakabayashi Kei) got to play and managed to get back-to-back wins. On Tuesday, Yu and Kobayashi played and got back to back 2nds, formidable fighters against their opponents. During their four games this week, they won a total of 14 hands. The will be playing be play four more games this week (the only team in the semifinals to do so), so they need to make sure not to overwork their players. If they can do well there, then they will have some good practice for the finals with 16 games in 2 weeks.

The other gaining team is Team Raiden. Their placements seem to be even, but their scores were not. In their 6th game of the semifinals, Setokuma was sent out. Before the east round was even over, Setokuma won four limit hands and had over 70,000. By the end of the game, he had won 6 hands and the Team was in the triple digits. Though they lost some of it on Monday, they ended up finish the day still in 3rd place. Over the next two weeks, they will need to push their opponents down to keep their placement and make the finals.

Going into the droppping teams, we have the Shibuya Abemas. After the first three games, the team was having quite a rough time. Shiratori had won three hands and ended up 3rd and Matsumoto kept getting hit and hit, reaching -11,600 at one point. With these big losses, it was time for team captain Ooi to save the day. With just a single dealer haneman, Ooi was able to win his game and make up for some of the losses. The team does drop down a bit to 4th place, but they still sit in a playoff position.

The Kadokawa Sakura Knights are next. It was an even week in placements, but they were slightly on the losing side. Unable to counter Kuma Kuma Time, Okada ended up losing quite a few points despite only placing 3rd. For Hori, he was unable to win anything big and ended up 4th. With these losses, they fall down from 3rd to 5th. However, with the scores so close, they can easily move back up with a few good outings.

The EX Furinkazan are 5th in the performance rankings. They had a good start, not so good of a finish. Katsumata started off with a silent but deadly dealer mangan to secure his win. After that, Aki dealt in 4 times and ended up negative in her game. On Tuesday, Matsugase and Katsumata were unable to overcome their strong opponents and both ended up 3rd. The team stays at 2nd place, but they fall below +200.0pts. If they can get motivated by the fear of being eliminated, they may be able to recover and even pass the Konami Mahjong Fight Club.

And finally, coming last in the performance rankings, we have the Konami Mahjong Fight Club. The team just wasn’t able to get 1st. Even with a stong-looking 8 riichi calls and 4 hands won, Takizawa just kept getting pummeled and ended up dealing into 6 hands, many of them being dama. Even after almost triple-digit losses, the team still sits at the top of the standings. However, they will have to watch out for other teams targetting them and trying to drag them down.

We’re two-fifths of the way through the semifinals! The score are pretty close and all of the teams are at risk of not making it. Can the U-Next Pirates keep it going? Will the Kadokawa Sakura Knights mmove back into a playoff position? Will the Shibuya Abemas reclaim 3rd place? As always, we’ll just have to wait and see!
