Game #1
Death By Dama

May 8, Game 1, E2-1
In E2-1, Aki is slightly below the lead after being noten the previous hand. With two riichi stick for the next winner, Aki can win any hand and move into 1st place. Aki starts off the hand 3-shanten with not much in terms of value. To her right is Takamiya at 3-shanten with a pair of green dragons and to her left is Hinata at 2-shanten. In the first row, both Hinata and Takamiya advance to good wait iishantens while Aki is iishanten with some bad waits. In the second row, Hinata draws a red 5s to be the first to tenpai and calls riichi on a 36m ryanmen.

Right after, as Aki throws a safe tile to avoid the ippatsu, Takamiya is able to call chii to get to tenpai on a 58m ryanmen.

With two players clearly in riichi, Aki has to be careful with her discards. As she weaves around, she finally gets to tenpai a few turns later by pairing up the 3s dora and waits dama on a 7m tanki, a tile that is completely safe against Hinata. At the end of Hinata’s second row, she draws and discards the 7m and deals into Aki. Aki wins the hand with Tanyao/Dora 2/Aka 1 for 8,000+300 plus three riichi sticks, moving into 1st place.

In S1-0, Takamiya is in 2nd place and 13,200 behind 1st place Aki. With a haneman tsumo, she would move into 1st place.
Takamiya starts out the hand 3-shanten with a dora 1s for value. She had a few open waits, including a 3-sided 258m waits, but the only way to use the 1s dora is to fill in a kanchan. In the first row, she drew an 8m to fill the 3-sided wait, secured a 3p pair and got to iishanten by turn 5, still waiting to resolve her 135s block. As Takamiya waits, Honda draws the 1s to get to tenpai and calls riichi on a 47p ryanmen.

Even as players folded, they somehow managed to get back to a working hand. Just past the start of the third row, Aki the dealer gets to tenpai and calls riichi on a 5m/5p shanpon.

During the ippatsu round, Takamiya draws the 4s. This would get her to tenpai, but taking that tenpai would mean discarding the 1s dora during the dealer’s ippatsu round. Though it was a very risky idea, Takamiya decided to take that risk. Takamiya calls riichi by throwing the dora and hopes that her 25p ryanmen wins. On her very next draw, she finds the 2p and wins the hand. Flipping the uradora, her 7p pair is now dora and upgrades her hand to a haneman. Takamiya wins with Riichi/Ippatsu/Tsumo/Pinfu/Tanyao/Ura 2 for 3,000/6,000 plus two riichi sticks to move into 1st place.

In S4-0, Honda is in 3rd place, 12,500 behind 2nd place Aki and 13,800 ahead of 4th place dealer Hinata. With Hinata being the dealer and 2nd place being so far ahead, Honda is thinking less about move up in placement and more about stopping Hinata from going on a dealer rampage and passing him. With any win, Honda will stay ahead of her.
Honda starts out the hand with good potential, 2-shanten with two ryanmens and a penchan. In the first few turns, Honda’s discards made it clear that he wanted to go for a quick hand such as a tanyao with good shapes. On turn 4, he discards a 1p to go for it, breaking the 3p tile acceptance. After filling in a 7s kanchan on turn 5, Honda draws a 3p on turn 6. Holding onto the 14p ryanmen is the only way to advance to iishanten, so he keeps it and hopes to fill it again to get to tenpai. In the second row, he gets to tenpai. Unfortunately, he is stuck with a 14p furiten wait. He has the option to call riichi to hope for a Riichi/Tsumo/Pinfu/Iipeikou/Ura 2 haneman, but the risk of Hinata chasing is too great and the chance of winning too small that he decides to stay dama. In the middle of the second row, Honda draws a 4p and wins the hand. Honda wins with Tsumo/Pinfu/Iipeikou for 700/1,300 to finish the game in 3rd place.

Standings

With that single win by Takamiya, the Konami Mahjong Fight Club rise from 4th to close to 1st. For the Shibuya Abemas, they fall down to the familiar 3rd place after Hinata was just unable to win a hand.
