Dora Draw

May 11, Game 1, E4-0

In E4-0, Shiratori is in 3rd place sitting in the south seat, 1,600 behind 2nd place Takizawa and 15,000 behind 1st place Hagiwara.

Shiratori starts out the hand 2-shanten for both chiitoi and a standard hand and has pairs of south, green dragon, 7m and the 3p dora. When Hagiwara discards the 7m on turn 2, Shiratori confirms a standard hand by calling pon and getting to iishanten. A few turns later, Shiratori draws a third south to get to tenpai and waits on a 3p/green dragon shanpon. On his very next draw, he finds the 3p and wins the hand. Shiratori wins with South/Dora 3 for 2,000/4,000, moving him into 2nd place

Red Dora Draw

May 11, Game 1, S2-2

In S2-2, Katsumata is tied for 3rd/4th place and 15,400 behind 2nd place dealer Hagiwara. With 1,600 in bonuses available, a mangan tsumo will put Katsumata within 1,800 of 2nd.

Katsumata starts out the hand by filling in a 7m dora penchan to get to 3-shanten. With two ryanmens and a pair secured, the path to sequences is set out. After filling in the last kanchan and filling in one of the ryanmens, Katsumata gets to tenpai on turn 3 and calls riichi on a 58s ryanmen.

Looking around the table, it looks like everyone is folding. However, as Hagiwara throws safe tiles, he starts to draw useful tiles as well. On turn 8, Hagiwara draws a 7m dora to fill in a penchan and get to iishanten. A turn later, he makes an ankou of 5m and calls riichi on a 69s ryanmen.

As turns went by, Shiratori and Takizawa drew the winning tiles, increasing the chances of the hand going to a draw. The second row became the third row and neither riichi player has won yet. Then, in the middle of the third row, Katsumata draws the red 5s and wins the hand. Katsumata wins with Riichi/Tsumo/Pinfu/Dora 1/Aka 1 for 2,000+200/4,000+200 plus two riichi sticks. Because of Hagiwara’s riichi, Katsumata now moves into 2nd place by 400.

In S3-0, Hagiwara is in 3rd place after Katsumata passed him the previous hand. Being 8,400 behind Shiratori, a mangan will put him close to or in 1st place.

Hagiwara starts out the hand 3-shanten with an ankou of 1p and a red 5p. If Hagiwara draws the 6p, he would create a 567p sequence and add another dora. In the first row, Hagiwara creates a 123m sequence and draws the 6p to get to iishanten. With a 13s1112p shape, Hagiwara is just a 2s and 3p away from also having a 123 sanshoku. At the end of the first row, Hagiwara gets to tenpai and calls riichi on a 23p wait, hoping get the 3p for extra value.

Looking at the table, the only person that could disrupt Hagiwara is the dealer Katsumata, who had already called white dragon earlier in the hand. When Hagiwra called riichi, Katsumata was already iishanten. At the end of the second row, Katsumata gets to tenpai and waits on an 8s/red dragon shanpon. Unfortunately, Katsumata would draw and discard the 3p in the middle of the third and deal into Hagiwara.

Hagiwara wins the hand with Riichi/Sanshoku/Dora 1/Aka 1 for 2,000/4,000, putting him within 400 of 1st place Shiratori.

Secured

May 11, Game 1, S4-0

In S4-0, Shiratori is in 1st place and has a narrow 400 lead over Hagiwara . With any winning hand, Shiratori will be able to end the game and secure 1st.

Shiratori starts out with quite a messy haipai, 4-shanten with some stray terminals and honours. After getting rid of them, Shiratori’s hand starts to take shape, pushing towards an open tanyao with two ryanmens. At the start of the second row, Shiratori calls one of those ryanmens to get to iishanten. Soon after, he calls pon on the 2m to get to tenpai on a 25s ryanmen.Near the middle of the second row, Hagiwara discards the red 5s trying to accept a ryanmen and deals into Shiratori. Shiratori wins the hand with Tanyao/Aka 1 for 2,000, winning the game.
