Going Up

May 19, Game 1, E1-1

In E1-1, Takizawa is tied for 1st place and wanting to gain as many points as possible to give the taem a chance at the championship.

Takizawa starts out the hand 3-shanten with a connected red 5s and a pair of white dragons. In the first row, he makes a 147m three-sided wait, makes the white dragons an ankou and gets to a guaranteed good wait iishanten by turn 3. In the middle of the second row, Takizawa gets to tenpai and calls riichi on a 47s ryanmen. After waiting through the second and third row, Takizawa finds his winning 4s in the second-last tile of the wall and wins the hand. Takizawa wins with Riichi/Tsumo/White Dragon/Aka 1 for 4,000+100 all.

Dama Mangan

May 19, Game 1, E3-0

In E3-0, Matsugase is in 2nd place, 11,600 behind 1st place Takizawa and 5,900 ahead 4th place Hagiwara. To have a chance at taking 3rd place in the team standings, Matsugase wants to put as much space between him and Hagiwara.

Matsugase starts out the hand 3-shanten with two penchans, a kanchan and a ryanmen, looking for a pair. In the first row, Matsugase converts the kanchan to a ryanmen, creates another and fills one in to get to 2-shanten. In the second row, he tries to shift his hand to a likely tanyao with a chance at iipeikou. As he does this, Takizawa gets to tenpai first and calls riichi on a 36p ryanmen.

On the ippatsu turn, Matsugase gets to iishanten. With no folding fodder, he pushes. A turn later, he gets to tenpai and stays dama on a 5p kanchan. At the end of the row, he draws the red 5p and wins the hand. Matsugase wins with Tsumo/Tanyao/Iipeikou/Aka 1 for 2,000/4,000 plus one riichi stick, just enough to move into 1st place.

Dora Tanki

In S2-0, Takizawa is in 2nd place and 3,000 behind 1st place Matsugase.

Takizawa starts out the pair 4-shanten for both a standard hand and chiitoi, holding a lone 7p and pairs of east and 4m. In the first row, Takizawa is only able to take one step forward, getting only a pair of 1s for progress. Since any other route is cheap, Takizawa decides at the start of the second row to aim for chiitoi, throwing the 5p from his 57p shape. Later in the row, he pairs up the 7m and the 6s to get to iishanten. At the start of the third row, Takizawa pairs up the 4s and calls riichi on a 7p tanki. Two turns later, he draws the 7p and wins the hand. Takizawa wins with Riichi/Tsumo/Chiitoi/Dora 2 for 3,000/6,000, moving back into 1st.

1st Place Denial

May 19, Game 1, S4-0

In S4-0, Hagiwara and Team Raiden are in a dangerous spot. Sitting in 4th, they are dangerously close to falling out of the standings podium. Currently, the EX Furinkazan and Matsugase are in 2nd place in this game and has the last dealer. Hagiwara’s goal in this hand is not to try to get 3rd, but to deny Matsugase from going into 1st place.

Hagiwara starts out the hand iishanten with his first 13 tiles, holding an ankou of white dragons for a yaku and two sequences. On turn 4, Hagiwara gets to iishanten and waits on 6 different tiles for tenpai. In the second row, Hagiwara calls chii and waits on a 69p nobetan. Soon after, Matsumoto discards the 9p and deals into Hagiwara. Hagiwara wins the hand with White Dragon only for 1,000 and ends the game.

Though the win doesn’t do anything for his own standing, preventing Matsugase from getting 1st may have saved the team from dropping down to 4th in the standings.
