Standings
The top-performing team this week with a +153.0pts gain is the Shibuya Abemas. With this positive week, they break their 3-week point loss streak. This gain was as a result of three wins a row, contributed by Hinata, Matsumoto and Ooi. For Ooi in particular, he was able to get his best score of the season with 62,100. With their results, the team was able to escape the negatives.
Also getting triple-digit gains this week is the Beast Japanext. Despite playing only two games this week, they made the most of it. Sarukawa played first and was having trouble gaining points going into the final quarter of the game. Then, with two crucial wins, he went from 4th place to winning by 100. Playing the second game was Sugawara, trying to get the team’s third win in a row. With a dealer mangan in the first hand, she didn’t look back and got the 1st. With the +112.1pts gain, the team is getting closer to escaping their 9th place position.
Gaining +89.7pts this week is the U-Next Pirates. Also playing only two games this week, the team had gains in both of them. Mizuhara got a win in the first game to put the team above +400.0pts and Mizuhara on the podium in the individual standings. With a big 2nd place, Kobayashi extended the teams lead. With their efforts and the other teams failing to catch up, the team has a +139.4pts over 1st place.
The last gaining team is the Kadokawa Sakura Knights. After a tough 4th place by Uchikawa to start off the week, Shibukawa stepped up to bat. Winning more than half of the hands in the game, he was able to reverse the team’s losses. With the team getting two 2nds on Friday to inch forward, the team moves up to 2nd place in the standings.
Team Raiden, Sega Sammy Phoenix, EX Furinkazan and Konami Mahjong Fight Club all had double-digit losses this week, ranging from -34.1 to -96.3. With the Beast Japanext and the Shibuya Abemas getting the majority of the wins, the other teams had to fight to stay afloat. For Team Raiden, they got two 2nds during their public viewing at Tokyo Tower, but it wasn’t enough to counteract the losses earlier in the week. The Sega Sammy Phoenix had two 4ths as Uotani and Kayamori continue their recent struggles, the EX Furinkazan had three 3rds and the Konami Mahjong Fight Club’s Sasaki Hisato had two 4ths during his birthday week.
Finally, coming last in the performance rankings, we have the Akasaka Drivens. A week after they were at the top of the performance rankings, they dropped down to the bottom of the performance rankings. It was an odd week for the team with all four players getting a 3rd place. Even though it was a less than ideal result, their ability to avoid falling to 4th is impressive. If this was just an off-week for them, it will be interesting to see how they perform next week.
And that’s a wrap for this week! The Pirates move back to the top of the standings, but other teams are quickly rising. Can the Shibuya Abemas rise up more and challenge for the top? Can the Beast keep going and move into a playoff spot? Will future birthday celebrants have bad mahjong luck? As always, we’ll just have to wait and see!
