M-League 2023-24 Week 21: Heart

Standings

The top team this week is the Sega Sammy Phoenix. On Tuesday, Uotani and Kayamori played for the team. Between the two of them, they won 10 hands, a third of all the hands played that day. This dominance led them to get a daily double, two 1sts in a single day. With their results this week, they reverse their big negative from last week (plus a bit more) and move up to 8th place and 63.0pts away from getting to 7th.

Coming in a close second is the Shibuya Abemas. The star of the week for the team is Matsumoto. In his two games, he also won a third of all the hands played and also got two 1sts. With the rest of the team avoiding 4th, the team is now in the triple-digit positives.

The final gaining team this week is the U-Next Pirates. They only had two games with two 2nds this week, but it doesn’t mean it wasn’t spectaculat. In the last hand of the first game, Mizuhara was in last place. Skipping a tsumo, calling a furiten riichi and winning, she managed to make a spectacular comeback to finish with a positive score. With a +20.4, they break their 3-week negative slide.

Surprisingly, there are six different teams that were negative this week. The Beast Japanext, Team Raiden, Konami Mahjong Fight Club, Akasaka Drivens, Kadokawa Sakura Knights all had losses ranging from -9.4 to -64.7. The Beast were stuck in the middle ranks this week and fell to the bttom of the standings. Team Raiden were the oppositve with only 1sts and 4ths, but the losses outweighed the 1sts. The Konami Mahjong Fight Club had two 4ths this week to lose ground to slide further away from 2nd. The Akasaka Drivens finished 2nd/4th on Tuesday and Sonoda was not allowed to beat his record for longest interview. The 1st place Kadokawa Sakura Knights break their two-week top-gainer streak with two 4ths this week.

Finally, we have the EX Furinkazan. Besides Aki’s game on Friday, the taem couldn’t gain any points this week. With Matsugase’s 3rd place on Tuesday, he falls below -400.0pts at the very bottom of the individual standings, almost 150.0pts from the next player. In total, the team falls deeper into 7th place and is a 4th place away from moving down a rank. With only 6 weeks left in the regular season, time is running out.

And that’s all for this week! Just like that, we are in the middle of February and six weeks away from the end of the regular season! Can the Sega Sammy Phoenix keep it going and clutch a playoff spot? Can the EX Furinkazan go to war and advance to the next round? What other incredible comebacks will we see in the coming weeks? As always, we’ll just have to wait and see!
