M-League 2023-24 Week 22: Swing

Standings

For the second week in a row, the Sega Sammy Phoenix are on top of the week’s performance rankings. The team’s fabulous February continues. They gained points in every single game they played. With Uotani’s 1st place, she moves back into the positives on the individual side. With a big +156.8pts gain this week, the team now sits in 6th place, just above the cutoff line and with an 85.6pts buffer.

Coming in a close 2nd and 3rd are the U-Next Pirates and the Akasaka Drivens. With two 1sts this week and beating the Kadokawa Sakura Knights in the two games they faced, the Pirates were able to complete a 341.0pts swing to be 212.2pts ahead of the Sakura Knights. As of the end of this week, the U-Next Pirates players are 1st, 2nd and 5th in the individual rankings. For the Akasaka Drivens, their 2/1/1/0 record brought them up to 3rd place (they actually hit 2nd for a brief moment on Friday) and sit 11.4pts away from the Kadokawa Sakura Knights.

Our last gaining team this week is the Beast Japanext. It was a good week for Daisuke, getting two 1sts this week to put him very close to the positives. His top play of the week was a dama haneman that moved him from 3rd to 1st in South 4. With their +61.1pts gain, the team moves up to 8th place in the standings.

The Shibuya Abemas, Konami Mahjong Fight Club and Team Raiden all had double-digit losses this week. The Shomatsu pair was sent out for the team’s only two games and they went 2nd/4th for -38.3pts. The Konami Mahjong FIght Club was unable to get 1st with their 0/2/1/1 record, moving them down to 4th place in the standings. For the borderline Team Raiden, a week of four 3rds in a row led them to slowly bleed points and drop them into 7th place, now 85.6pts from a playoff spot.

Sitting with a very unfortunate triple-digit loss is the EX Furinkazan. In the two games that the team played, they had two 4ths by their team’s two top players this season, Katsumata and Rumi. Between the two of them, they dealt in 11 times and ended up losing 132.3pts, moving them into the dreaded 9th place.

And finally, coming in last in the performance rankings this week, we have the Kadokawa Sakura Knights. It was a very rough week for the team. Despite the best efforts of the entire team, they ended up with a 0/0/1/3 record and were -196.4pts. The team drops down to 3rd place in the standings and the consequences go beyond the team rankings. On the individual side, Hori drops into 4th and Shibukawa drops into 6th place, straying further away from the MVP award. There are five more weeks left for the team and the players to make their final push for the top.

And that’s all for this week! By the end of next week, we will be in March, the last month of the regular season. How will the Sega Sammy Phoenix cap off February, their best month every year? Can Team Raiden, Beast Japanext and EX Furinkazan fight their way to a playoff spot? How will the MVP race go down? As always, we’ll just have to wait and see!
