M-League In English: Our Interview With Nicolas-Pro

On July 16, 2024, it was announced that NPM pro Nicolas will be doing live simultaneous translations of M-League broadcasts with U-Next Pirates player and fellow NPM pro Nakabayashi Kei starting next season.

We had a chance to get in touch with Nicolas-pro to tell us more about the project.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi, I’m Nicolas, but you might know me as xkime in the Mahjong world or in the Tenhou Phoenix (Houou) tables. My journey from Argentina to Japan has been anything but typical. I discovered Riichi Mahjong by chance, and it captivated me instantly. What started as a casual interest turned into a passion that led me across the globe to Japan, where I naturalized — here, Mahjong is woven into the cultural fabric.

During the day, I work solving complex tech challenges and helping businesses thrive. By night, I’m deeply involved in the Mahjong community, competing in tournaments and sharing my love for the game. I’m also a J-Rock and Visual Kei enthusiast, learning to sing and play the piano. This mix of strategy, technology, and creativity defines who I am. If you want to know more about my journey, visit https://www.nikorasu.pro/ and http://npmahjong.com/about.

How did you come up with this idea? Why was it important for you?

The idea was born when Nakabayashi-pro and I met earlier this year. We hit it off instantly, and he shared his long-time dream of creating something like this, bringing the overseas communities onboard. Coincidentally, I had always envisioned doing the same. It felt like fate was at play, presenting us with the perfect opportunity to collaborate on something truly special.

How did you get Nakabayashi-pro in on the project?

Our partnership began at Kuwada Kenta-pro’s birthday celebration in Osaka, the current Saikyoui and Nakabayashi-pro’s “younger brother”. A mutual friend introduced us, and we quickly bonded over our shared passion for this project. It was clear we were on the same wavelength. That meeting was the catalyst for everything that followed

Is this an official collaboration with M-League?

This project is entirely independent and not officially sponsored, endorsed, or backed by the M-League organization. We’re driven by our passion and vision to create something unique.

How will the format work?

We’ll be watching on Abema, but our commentary will stream live on Nakabayashi-pro’s YouTube channel. This setup allows fans to enjoy an immersive experience, blending the excitement of the original broadcast with our real-time insights and discussions.

What you think will be your biggest challenge?

I think the biggest challenge is keeping our commentary exciting for both experienced players and beginners, as well as not losing the thread when explaining difficult concepts. We really need your support and feedback to help us bring the thrill of Riichi Mahjong to more people. Let’s share this amazing game and grow the community together!

Will Nakabayashi-pro also be speaking in English?

I’ll definitely encourage him to speak some English, although it’s a work in progress for him. It’s a fun challenge, and with time, we hope to bring a more bilingual experience to our viewers. It’s all part of the journey and growth.

What are your hopes for this project in the future?

My ultimate goal is to show M-League officials the immense value in offering official game commentary in multiple languages. Your support is crucial in demonstrating this potential. Together, we can bring the excitement of M-League to a global audience. Please join us in this adventure, and let’s make this vision a reality. Your support and feedback are key as we learn and grow in this endeavor. Let’s make history together!

Unfortunately not for sale. But maybe someday…
