The strongest gainer this week is the EX Furinkazan. On both Thursday and Friday, they had a 1st and a 2nd, gaining points with every game. With their big climb, they move up to 214.9pts after 8 games, giving them an average of more than 100.0pts per week and half of their games being 1sts.
Also gaining points this week are the U-Next Pirates, Team Raiden and Earth Jets. The U-Next Pirates continue to hold their 4th avoidance streak, the only team to do so. Making it more impressive is the fact that they’ve played 10 games already, more than most teams. And with Yu’s 91,500 on Friday, he sits at the top of the rankings for highest hanchan. For Team Raiden, Both Setokuma and Honda got a 1st place to push the team into the triple-digits and into 3rd place. And the Earth Jets get their first two wins in team history with Kazuma and Aikawa both getting a 1st place.
Losing points are the Akasaka Drivens, Beast X, Konami Mahjong Fight Club, Kadokawa Sakura Knights and Shibuya Abemas. An even week for the Akasaka Drivens sends them slghtly negative, but the team remains above 0.0pts and in 4th place. The Beast X are in a similar position with only 2nds and 3rds, but they also remain positive overall. The Konami Mahjong Fight Club had six games this week, but were unable to get 1st in any of them, falling down to 8th. The Sakura Knights had an okay result on Thursday with a 1st and 3rd that kept them near the top, but back-to-back 4ths by Hori and Okada pushed the team all the way down to 5th place. And for the Shibuya Abemas, Shiratori’s yakuman wasn’t enough for him to maintain 1st place, and the 3rd and two 4ths just brought the team down more and put them in 9th.
Finally, we have the Sega Sammy Phoenix. The rough times continue for the team. They did get their first 1st place from Daigo on Tuesday, but they ended up finishing the week with a 1/1/0/4 record, putting them 1/1/0/6 and -228.2pts on the season. It’s quite a shocking start for the defending champions, but they have only played 8 of their 120 games this season. As we’ve seen with Daigo last season, comebacks are always possible.
And that’s all for this week! From now until around mid-February, all of our weeks will have 12 games going, 50% more than previous years. What will be in store for us during Week 3? Will there be more Ura 3 wins? Will we have a third week of yakuman? As always, we’ll just have to wait and see!
