May 4, Game 2

In the second game, Takizawa is playing for the Konami Mahjong Fight Club, trying to avenge Hisato getting his 1st place taken in the last hand.

Takizawa starts out the hand with an intriguing 2-shanten hand. He has pairs of both red dragon and south, as well as the structure of a 678 sanshoku (needing a 7p and a 6s to make it happen). On turn 4, he draws a 6s to complete the 678s sequence, then discards the 6p from a 668p shape to confirm his sanshoku.

To his left, dealer Shimoishi is trying to save the team after Daisuke’s negative 4th place to start the finals. On turn 5, he is the first to tenpai and calls riichi on a 356m wait. If he wins on the 6m, it will be at least a mangan.

Immediately after, Takizawa makes a triplet of souths and gets to tenpai on a 7p kanchan, staying dama. On his next turn, he draws the 7p and wins the hand. Takizawa wins with Tsumo/Sanshoku/South for 2,000/4,000 plus a riichi stick.

In E2-0, Takizawa is now the dealer and starts off at 3-shanten with a red 5s double dora. Though there is the potential for another sanshoku (with 789), going for it will leave the red 5s isolated. On turn 2, he pairs up the 9p, lessening its chance at happening. On turn 3, he draws an 8s, creating a 57899s shape. With a 69m ryanmen in manzu, Takizawa could theoretically call the 9m to get to tenpai on a 5s dora tanki. Or, he could pair up the 5s and have a chance at sanshoku that way.

In the second row, Takizawa draws the 6s. The sanshoku is dead, but he is tenpai with the red 5s double dora secured. He calls riichi and waits on a 69m ryanmen, guaranteed at least a mangan. Two turns later, he draws the 6m and wins the hand. Takizawa wins with Riichi/Tsumo/Pinfu/Dora 1/Aka 1 for 12,000.

In E2-1, Takizawa starts at 3-shanten with strong value, holding two secured red fives. On turn 4, he gets to iishanten, waiting on 14 different tiles for tenpai, all of them giving a good wait. It’s no surprise that he is able to get to tenpai on his next turn. He calls riichi on a 369m three-sided wait, wanting the 9m to add ittsuu and get haneman minimum. In the second row, Shimoishi discards the 9m and deals into Takizawa. Takizawa wins with Riichi/Pinfu/Ittsuu/Aka 2/Ura 1 for 18,000+300, moving Takizawa up to 64,300 and Shimoishi into the negatives.

Final Scores

Standings

Takizawa got three limit hands to start the game and nobody could catch up. Thanks to their efforts, they are now closer to 1st place than they are to 3rd. But, Uchikawa did get a strong +23.4pts gain to push them above +300.0pts and maintain their spot at the top. It’s also a battle near the bottom with the Beast X and Team Raiden just 11.0pts apart. That big -26,200 result by Shimoishi really hurt the team. Starting the finals with two negative 4ths is never a good thing.

And that’s all for the first day of the finals! Only 7 more days to go! Will we have more big hands and big upsets coming our way? As always, we’ll just have to wait and see!
